Hello Downer(LOL)….I am unfortunately am a seasoned vet when it comes to sciatic pain! My sciatic nerve runs THROUGH my periphormus muscle (SP) instead of around it like its supposed to. So anytime a muscle strain happens in the right hip….I too am down for the count.
I take a muscle relaxer for it, and it does WONDERS!!!!! Narcotics never helped the pain believe it or not. So, ya, if you have some on hand, you can take them with sub. I do. Not often but I have with no interaction. Don’t substitute my opinion for a doctors advice, oviously, but I’ve never had a problem with it.
They are actually trying to push for me to have surgery to cut through that muscle, pull the nerve out, and sew the muscle back up….which just sounds too painful for me.
I hope this helps. There are several stretches you can do to ease the pain, but one that works every time for me is the "figure four" stretch. Lay flat on your back with your knees up if its your right hip hurting, cross your right leg over your left knee…so that your right ankle is resting comfortably on your left knee. Reach between your legs with your right arm and outside your left leg with your left arm. Pull your left leg towards your chest GENTLY but steadily….and you will feel a great release of tension and pressure on your sciatic nerve. If your left hip is hurting, do the opposite. God, I just reread this, and I hope to God it makes sense! LOL….you could always google it, and it will have pictures. Let me know if that helped. It gets rid of 80% of my pain every single time.
Good luck…
