The reason your doctor might prefer you to be on methadone is just because there’s been a lot more research over the years on methadone in pregnancy than there has been with Suboxone. He’s probably just erring on the side of caution. There’d be 50x more studies into methadone in pregnancy than for buprenorphine, if anything just because it’s been around longer. I’ve seen some data sheets on buprenorphine in pregnancy / breastfeeding and they were labelled "Limited human data – potential toxicity".
That doesn’t mean that buprenorphine isn’t a better option than methadone. It’s just less researched. I personally would rather go with buprenorphine, just because I’m sure a baby would find methadone more intoxicating just like I would. Also there’s been plenty of mothers come in here who were on buprenorphine while pregnant and who had relatively few problems.
Rule just got me considering another scenario. What if your doctor is just apprehensive to prescribe you Subutex? He likely knows that Suboxone isn’t proven safe for pregnancy and Subutex is the better option… but maybe he doesn’t like the idea of prescribing Subutex at all? RB’s fantastic disinformation campaign has made a lot of doctors apprehensive about Subute.
